Theme Commentary
Principles of Adult LearningDaniel has not established a healthy psychological climate for Min Soo. Repeatedly using his errors as an example for instruction has resulted in fear and embarrassment which are impeding Min Soo’s progress.
Furthermore, Daniel should reconsider the lay out of the physical environment. Bringing all students closer to the presentation area will help with Min Soo’s eyesight and encourage participation from quieter students. Yu Na has specific expectations for this course and she is repeatedly frustrated by her limited participation in the class. If Daniel truly feels that tutoring Ji Hoon will benefit Yu Na, he must focus her attention on the outcomes of this objective and the level of importance she should be working toward. |
Individual Learning StyleMin Soo seems to be a more active learner in that he best understands new material by 'trying it out' and by seeking support from the larger group when processing new information. Conversely, Ji Hoon is a reflective learner who prefers to think quietly about the content and would rather work alone.
Daniel should refrain from giving excessive positive feedback to Ji Hoon as it will only contribute to his lack of motivation. Imbalanced feedback will also frustrate other students, like Yu Na, who are listening to this unwarranted praise. As a result, Yu Na feels that Daniel lacks credibility as an instructor because she observes him praise Ji Hoon for his minimal effort and criticize Min Soo for his brave attempts. |
Cultural InfluenceConfucian teachings place a strong emphasis on the respect for elders. Min Soo’s feelings about his age clearly influence his behavior in the classroom. The age gap also contributes to the behavior of other students in the classroom as well. His embarrassment is a clear example of the Concept of Face in East Asian cultures. As Min Soo receives more criticism, his individual view is affected for he no longer values his accomplishments.
Age and status also prevent confrontation. Yu Na doesn’t feel comfortable expressing her concerns to an authority figure as it could be misinterpreted as a sign of disrespect. |
Administrative Issues
If a change is not made in this classroom, Yu Na will transfer to a different class, Ji Hoon will fail the course, and Min Soo will give up on learning English. If Daniel loses these students, he will not be offered a new teaching contract next semester. If Noble Language Institute loses its teacher and its students, there will be negative financial consequences for the business.
